John C. Thompson
Clemmons, NC

I am an artist with a lifelong interest in art and photography, currently working in the medium of graphite, portraying what I see in my head and in my imagination in shades of black, white and grey. After spending many years wearing many different hats and working in several different fields, I have recently begun to sell my art. Over the years I have shared my work with relatives and co-workers, exhibited my art in local art shows in nearby Winston-Salem and a gala at the Calhoun County Museum in St. Matthews, SC, and also shared my sketches with friends on Facebook.

I grew up living inside Tanglewood Park located beside the Yadkin River between Clemmons and Bermuda Run, NC. At that time the park was owned by the brother of major tobacco entrepreneur, R.J. Reynolds. My dad was the park maintenance supervisor. After the park was closed in the evening my brother and I had a huge playground all to ourselves with lots of animals like deer, raccoons and ducks. We rode horses, swam in the pool, played on the golf course, and enjoyed our huge playground.

Professional Photography Career

In 1979 I began working towards a career in professional photography by taking Photography I, II, and III courses at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, NC.

As Staff Photographer at the Alderman Company, High Point, NC, and as Photo Illustrator at the Photographic House in Dover, NJ, I was responsible for planning and execution of various commercial photographic assignments.

As a Senior Commercial Photographer at Norling Studios in High Point, NC, I was responsible for assisting the studio manager in planning, scheduling, and execution of various photographic assignments and projects. I also acted as Studio Manager on a temporary basis during the Studio Manager’s absence.

As a Freelance Photographer in several major commercial photography studios in High Point, NC, I was responsible for project planning and execution of various photographic assignments.

Professional Photography Honors and Awards

I was a member of the Professional Photographer’s Association of America during my commercial photography career. I received thirteen Certificates of Merit from Professional Photographer’s Association for commercial photography.

In 1990, my photograph, “Stepping Out”, was chosen to be published in the first annual Professional Photography International Loan Collection. The collection is a yearly exhibition of one hundred and fifty images from photographers all over the world.

Artist Career

Currently a member of Associated Artists of Winston-Salem.
